The Canadian media is indignant that next month’s G8 meeting in Huntsville, Ontario, followed by the back-to-back G20 in Toronto, are likely to cost a staggering $1 billion dollars. Huntsville is a lovely rural spot, deep in woody Muskoka. The land of lakes. The problem, alas, is the black fly. In June they are out in their trillions. And while Huntsville could just about cope with the accommodation needs of the G8, there is absolutely no way this little town could handle the G20. Toronto has plenty of hotel accommodation but lots of high rise buildings overlooking the places where the world leaders will meet. So these have to be checked out by the RCMP. Everyone is up in arms. The solution, surely, is to hold these jamborees in the same place every year. One idea is the UN in New York. Here is the hyper-ventilating pundit, Rex Murphy, fuming and spluttering about the cost of it all on the CBC’s The National which went out last night.
