Fascinating piece in the Guardian today by Nick Davies which alleges that police sat on mountains of evidence which showed huge numbers of public figures had their voicemails hacked by people on the payroll of the News of the World at the time when Andy Coulson was editor. Coulson now works for David Cameron as his Head of Communications. He has always denied any knowledge of illegal activities by people on the paper’s payroll. Clive Goodman, the NotW royal correspondent and Glen Mulcaire were both jailed for their parts in the phone hacking scandal. The Guardian claims that the police had material showing “4,332 names or partial names of people in whom the two men (Goodman and Mulcaire) had an interest, 2,978 numbers or partial numbers for mobile phones and 30 audio tapes which appear to contain an unspecified number of recordings of voicemail messages.” Yet we are told the police failed to alert all those whose phones and voicemails had been hacked, despite promising to do so. If my voicemail had been hacked, I’d want to know.
