The last PMQs of this Parliament and what will be my abiding memory? Not the histrionics. Or the mad, screaming exchanges. But the hushed moments at 12 noon when we listen, yet again, to tributes to the soldiers who have fallen in Afghanistan. Two firefighters also lost their lives in Southampton. Every week, like a ticking metronome, the death toll mounts. It is a tragedy. The new Parliament must set a clear timetable for getting out of Afghanistan. The Canadians have done so. We should follow their example. We cannot turn a medieval society into a modern democratic State. Only the Afghans can do that. Elsewhere in Westminster, there is purposeful activity. Offices have bags full of old papers piled outside, waiting for collection. In the parking bays between the former Scotland Yard buildings, Norman Shaw North (where I live) and Norman Shaw South, there are three containers waiting to be filled. A huge truck marked “Confidential On-site data Destruction” is humming as the shredders swallow papers that were once important. In its own way, it is all quite impressive.
