Back from an uplifting service of thanksgiving and a celebration for the life of Frank Hartley, a socialist and co-operator of the old school who died earlier this month. Christ Church Methodist, in the middle of Nelson, was packed to hear wonderful tributes from the Revd Andrew Turner and from Frank’s old friend, Alan Evans, and from Pauline McCormick, a Conservative councillor and a Mayor herself in 2004. She made me laugh when she described being on an appeals committee with Frank who was typically on the side of those challenging the Council. She said he always wanted to give away the Town Hall clock. What a picture that painted in my mind! Frank was a councillor for the Southfield Ward in Nelson for an amazing 45 years. He was first elected in 1954 and stood down in 2000. Between 1957 and 1969 he was returned unopposed. For decades he served the people of Southfield, a familiar figure, walking round the area, chatting to everyone. He was Mayor of Nelson in 1967/8. He received the Freedom of the Borough of Pendle in 2001. We shall all remember Frank. Tags:
