I am spending a lot of time thinking about the unfolding ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. For me, it puts the election in perspective. BP is taking full responsibility for what happened. Tell that to the turtles and the seabirds and all the other creatures whose home is the Mississippi delta. The Guardian editorial today tells us that, last year, BP “spent $15.9m on federal lobbying on issues like drilling on the outer continental shelf.” It says BP “continues to oppose tougher rules of safety and auditing, arguing that voluntary compliance is enough”. Not after this. Surely? And, talking of disasters waiting to happen, go to the Canadian north. To the tar sands of Alberta. Where huge poisonous ponds hold tailings from the mining. These ponds which can be seen from space are contained by giant earth bunds. Canons fire intermittently to scare away the wildfowl which would otherwise land on the tainted water. If any of these giant toxic reservoirs leak, the deadly pollutants will go straight into the Athabasca River and up into the Arctic Ocean. If that happens, saying sorry won’t be enough. Tags:
