Pendle’s new Conservative MP, Andrew Stephenson, has been drawn number 14 at PMQs on Wednesday. This far down the list he is unlikely to be reached. But, instead of just sitting there like a spectator at Wimbledon, he could try to catch the Speaker’s eye. I hope so. He could press Cameron on the deplorable decision to axe major rebuilding work at four of Pendle’s secondary schools. (Of course, he has the opportunity this afternoon to skewer Michael Gove at Education Questions.) Or he could go on his campaign to reinstate Burnley’s A&E Department. It’s topical. We have just had a report on the issue from Professor Matthew Cooke, the National Director of Emergency and Urgent Care. And his friend, Andrew Lansley, has a new plan to shake up the NHS again. This would give him the perfect intro to a question loaded with front page potential. Primary Care Trusts are to be wound down with their commissioning responsibilities transferred to GPs - whether the doctors want this or not. So does this mean that the future of Accident and Emergency Departments will be in the hands of local GPs? Presumably. One other point. On Wednesday, Coalition MPs may feel compelled to mention Mandelson’s self penned hagiography. The Third Man will probably be in the Peer’s Gallery, looking down at PMQs from above, purring with self satisfaction as he sets the news agenda yet again. Just ignore him.
