When Pendle’s Lib-Dem peer, the irrepressible Baron Tony Greaves, gave up his weekly column in the excellent Lancashire Telegraph back in July he complained about the stream of bad news coming from the Coalition Government. “If I continue to write these columns they will inevitably consist of weekly attacks on my own party which I’d rather not do.” Instead he zeroed in on the hapless Conservative Education Secretary, Michael Gove, accusing him of “political stupidity” for the way he stopped the Building Schools for the Future programme in its tracks. “I also want to know why the Liberal Democrats are going along with the ridiculous proposals for ‘free schools’ and for existing schools to convert to academies at the expense of the rest – another madcap Gove scheme.” We can only imagine what Greaves thinks of today’s revelations in the Guardian that Rachel Wolf, a former special adviser to Gove while he was Shadow Education Secretary, landed a £500,000 contract to promote free schools and get them up and running. The contract was not advertised. Oh dear! An oversight! In the meantime, I see that Baron Greaves has abandoned his vow of silence and is now slamming the Coalition’s police cuts.
