Next Wednesday, angry students will gather in London to protest about the huge hike in tuition fees that is coming. They promise a “decapitation strategy” to get rid of Lib Dem MPs who break their pre-election pledge “to vote against any increase in fees in the next Parliament and to pressure the Government to introduce a fairer alternative.” I think Pendle’s Conservative MP should join the demo – in an act of solidarity. When he was a student he got so angry about tuition fees it drove him into party politics. And here he is now, a fully-fledged Conservative MP who can do something about it! Stephenson told students at Nelson and Colne College back in April 2010: “Why did I get involved in politics? I was too young to vote in 1997 when the current Labour Party came to power – I am 29 years old now. “I went to university in 1999 and I was one of the first students who had to pay tuition fees introduced by this Government. “That, at the time, drove me into getting involved in politics. Because, at the time, as a student, the amount I had to pay towards my education. “I thought education should be free. It motivated me into getting involved in party politics.” The NUS should ask him to join them on Wednesday. I want to hear him tell the demo what he told Pendle students seven months ago. Cameron’s photographer on the civil service payroll Shocking news that we are all paying for the Prime Minister’s vanity snaps. But it doesn't end there. The Independent on Sunday has done a public service by revealing that Cameron’s “personal stylist” has left Conservative Central Office for a job in the Cabinet Office. Where will it all end? In tears, I suspect.
