There is growing anxiety about the Coalition’s plans to privatise everything that isn’t nailed down. What mandate do they have to push through humongous changes when so little detail was mentioned during last year’s election? It is perfectly obvious there are stresses and strains in the Coalition. We know it is going to end in tears. But when? I put my trust in Baron Tony Greaves whose Guardian letter last week predicted all sorts of trouble ahead. I see Greaves as the little yellow canary down a very deep mine shaft. When he stops squawking (he doesn’t tweet) and goes silent we should sit up and take notice. It means something is going to happen. Greaves hates the Conservatives. Mind you, he hates lots of other people too. I recall Simon Hoggart writing this way back in 1996 when he found himself at a fringe meeting addressed by Tony Greaves: “a councillor from Pendle, Lancashire, who has been coming to Liberal Conferences since around the time of Gladstone. Mr Greaves is a world class hater. If there was a transfer market for haters, he would be Alan Shearer. He has hated me for at least twenty years, though I can’t think why, since it wasn’t me who wrote that – with his bald scalp and bushy beard – Mr Greaves looks as if his head has been put on upside down.” In fact, the comical description came from his Guardian colleague, Derek Brown, who tragically died last week.
