The BBC Politics Show at lunchtime today produced a few sparks. We are in the delightful setting of the Leeds and Liverpool canal at Salterforth, just yards away from the splendid Anchor Inn. I am on live with the two people who want my job: Andrew Stephenson, the Conservative, and Afzal Anwar, the Liberal Democrat. I think I was a bit too animated. But, sadly, that is the price I pay for living with the Ashcroft issue for years. Forcing him to come clean about his tax dodging. I use the term “tax dodger” a few times to get a reaction. As the piece draws to its close, I remind viewers that William Hague was in town just a few days ago to support the Conservative candidate. I make the point that Hague found out about Ashcroft non-domery “a couple of months ago”. But David Cameron only discovered the truth a month ago. Hmmmm. I ask Andrew why Hague didn’t tell Cameron as soon as he, Hague, discovered the truth about Ashcroft’s tax status. Alas, no answer. Just a gentle poke in the ribs, noting I have a fixation about Ashcroft. True. I shall stick with this issue until we get all the answers. He goes on to talk about the 300 community groups he has visited. Sounds to me like he was reporting to the man with the money from Belize. I can hear the voice. “Andrew, you are doing well but you do realise you won’t get the next tranche of money unless you hit that 300 community group target. And have your photograph taken at each event. Just to show us you were there!”
