The Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, has gone. In the space of a few hours the Australian Labour Party has changed its Leader and the country’s Prime Minster. Just like that! The Sydney Morning Herald said it was a coup. How on earth did they do it? What does the ALP constitution and rulebook say about these things? Or was it simply the case that the so-called “power brokers” calculated that Rudd wasn’t going to win the forthcoming election and, therefore, had to go. Sorry mate! You gotta go. His Deputy, Julia Gillard, stepped up to the plate and is now Australia’s first ever woman PM. No messing! Now the former PM apologises for “blubbering” as he steps down. In the circumstances, I think he is allowed a blubber or two. I met Kevin Rudd a year or so ago when he was visiting Westminster. He was very engaging. I also recall he looked very smart. After a rather impressive tour d’horizon it was opened up for questions. I stick my hand in the air. "When is Australia going to become a republic?" These short questions are the deadliest. He tip-toed through the daisies. "Some time, but no time soon." He explained his position with great eloquence but I suppose I expected a more muscular answer. I am left wondering how Julia Gillard would have answered such a simple and straightforward question.
