Andy Coulson, the Conservative Party’s Director of Communications and David Cameron’s right hand man, is in the news again. We are asked to believe that Coulson, the former editor of the News of the World, knew nothing about the illegal activities of Glen Mulcaire, Stephen Whittamore and the private investigator named today by the Guardian only as “Mr A” who were all in the pay of the newspaper when Mr Coulson was either deputy editor or editor. The Guardian alleges that “Mr A” was subsequently re-employed by the paper after serving a seven year prison sentence for blackmail. They cannot disclose the identity of “Mr A” because he is awaiting trial for a violent crime. I expect Coulson will want to state categorically that he did not know that a convicted blackmailer had been re-employed by the News of the World and paid out of the editorial budget when he was editor.
